Alternate Jobs (Omake)

The two other jobs Harry could have ended up with if his spur of the moment answering had gone another way...

Warnings: These are just what-if scenarios. Not part of AtO's established time-line, so these are full of plot-holes.

1- Gardener
"I didn't actually believe them when they said your snakeroot was still healthy and growing," the woman said as she looked around the room in awe.
Harry smiled politely.
"I'd like to buy all of these plants."
Harry gaped slightly. "Okay?"
"And I think it'd be helpful if you dropped by the greenhouses. Maybe you can find out what's troubling our plants there..."
"I'm not a professional or anything. Everything I know is self-learned," Harry said.
"And yet, you are the only person in Konoha who has managed to keep their stock of snakeroot alive and healthy for use. What's your secret?"
Harry sighed. "I talk to them."
The lady blinked in surprise.

Harry fiddled with the cuff of his sleeve as he followed the woman through the hospital. "You do remember me telling you I'm not a professional or anything."
The lady nodded. "Yes, I remember. But it's been two weeks since then and our plants here haven't shown any sign of recovery. But your plants are still thriving. Maybe your... unconventional methods have some merit."
Harry stifled a snort at the polite wording. "Don't expect much."
The greenhouse was better than he'd expected. Sure the plants were in various stages of dying, but it wasn't all bad.
"Then I'll leave you to it," the lady said and left.
Harry walked around, paying particular attention to the plants that needed the most help. The things I end up doing to maintain my cover story... Harry patted the soil beneath one of the dying plants. "Don't be like that, I'm sure they'll take better care of you from now on..." Herbivicus.
The colourless spell seeped in to the soil releasing the scent of rain-drenched soil. Harry smiled in accomplishment as the plant rippled slightly and it became a healthy green.

On the roof of the building opposite the greenhouse, a masked man gaped.

2- Fortune teller
Harry stared at the cigarette in the bearded man's mouth and then looked down in to the tea cup in front of him. "Your death will come after your lungs fill up with smoke and ash."
The teenager beside the man snorted softly and rolled his eyes but the man just smiled politely and paid him before leaving.
Harry wanted to scoff at himself too as he pushed the tea cup away. Why is it that the first 'fortune' I gave dealt with death? Maybe I'm drawing too much inspiration from Trewlany.
-x-x-x-x-x-
A week later, the teenager returned wearing black. His face was grim as he emptied his tea cup and passed it towards Harry.
Harry frowned as he recognised the expression on the other boy's face as a mixture of fear and a need for reassurance. He looked down in to the tea cup. "You won't be dying any time soon."
His customer relaxed slightly.
"You'll bury your problems easily."
The boy blinked, looking slightly confused but he paid and left.

Harry didn't know whether to laugh or cry when the boy came back with new customers two days later.

So, mid September and I'm back in the normal swing of things. Funny how it's easier to write now than it was in the summer. You'll be happy to know that I now have 3000+ words written for chapter 13- that makes me quite happy actually.

I've also finished my Fairy tailXHp crossover- only it doesn't have a name and proper summary. The old summary just wasn't working for it- understandable since I added so much more to the story since I wrote that summary.

But for the title, I can't think of anything- does that mean that the story isn't as complete as I think it is? Usually after you've written something/ know the plot, doesn't the name just come to you- that's how I name all the chapters for AtO.

  1. I can never think of something to write when I have free time but when I'm avoiding doing something I know I should be working on, well lets just say I can write tons.

I love both of those alt jobs.  Harry could probably fit both of them into his everyday life anyways as a passing joke or for amusement.  Jiraiya's still around and kicking and if Harry decides to do the tealeaf reading for Naruto and uses the book to interpet it accurately...

Or better yet telling Kakashi's future.... "Humm this lump means your death and this one means dawn?  Probably means you'll die at dawn soon.  Okay this other lump is wierd.. you'll get better!!  Umm sorry Kakashi-san I'm not really an expert."

  2. As silly as this may sound: I find both of these ideas very intriguing as well. Meeting Naruto would have probably been very different, for instance. Also, Harry may have become closer to other people instead of Izumo and Kotetsu (Gardener -> Ino, for example).

  3. Yup, each job would have created a ripple effect. But with both these options, I think Harry would always end up meeting with Team Asuma in some form or the other. Of course, there'd have to be a switch up/addition of new events to Naruto canon to makes the scenarios more plausible...

With what I wrote, Garderner would be Shizune then Yamanaka family.  Well it would depend how Harry got his plants in the first place.

  4. Well considering Harry's just making up/saying ridiculous things that just happen to come true, I'm sure whatever he says to Kakashi would be utterly hilarious especially when it does come true.

I think by the time the Pein invasion rolls by, Harry would be so desperate to prove that he isn't a real fortune teller (I personally think he's not a big fan of deception) so he'd make predictions of great doom and destruction. Unfortunately for him, the Pein invasion just cements everyone's beliefs in his powers of prediction. =D

  5. Yeah there's so many things he could predict for Kakashi that would make the situation hilarious once the whole Pein invasion was over.

    "Beware a red haired man!"

"You will resolve a old family issue."  Knowing full well that all of Kakashi's family is dead but pretending he didn't know.

"Forgiveness will bring you and others peace."

"You will be going on a unexpected camping trip."

"You won't realize it at first but give everything you got to your job today and you'll get back what you invested."

LMAO doom and destruction... are you sure that you can't have him do it to show Naruto the diffrent fields of wizarding study.  Then end up doing it as a joke when some of the others are around and them somehow getting accurate predictions?

  6. "Beware a red haired man!"--> nice throwback to the actual books there. I always loved that bit.

And while predictions for Kakashi are amusing, can you just imagine the things Harry would make up for Danzo?

"Your eye will lead trouble to you." Or something nonsensical like "History is dangerous because it's still alive."

As for fortune telling in AtO- no i can't see Harry thinking of divination as funny anymore- not after everything he learned/went through in OotP. He's more likely to despise and ignore it for the mess it created in his life. This omake doesn't take that plot point in to consideration.

  7. Dream of StoriesJune 06, 2012

I have a habit of half writing stories as a bunny attacks me and then leaving them unposted and hidden on my hard drive to go back to whenever I get bored... But I figured I should ask this anyway even if chances are it'll never see the ight of day. So.... Um... Do you mind if I use the fortune teller idea in my latest attempt at a story?

  8. Sure. Have fun expanding it. If it does end up online- be sure to send me a link.

  9. Now that will be something I would like to read! :) Good luck in writing!

  10. Harry the self-taught apothecarist? :D Ninja go to the hospital for most things and drop by Harry's for anything the hospital can't handle?

I liked the fortune one the best. More jobs, please! Hmmm... Harry the tailor? (Of Western fashions?) Harry the gillyweed-enabled diver? :D

  11. Diver? What would he be diving for and why? Unless it's treasure hunting/salvaging from sunken ships or something. That has the potential for putting Harry in a lot of trouble eventually. Especially when greedy ninja decide to stead Harry's gillyweed and treasure. But I think Konoha is pretty far inland - so no sunken treasure hunter Harry... unless you meant something else.

  12. Any chance for more alternate jobs? Especially fortune-teller!Harry or other less flashy wizarding skills.

  13. I did toy around with the idea of archeologist-ish/treasure-hunter! Harry. Obviously his success at finding things/places randomly would astound everyone and get him in trouble. But I never actually sat down and fleshed out the idea.

  15. I was thinking pearl-diving, in that I gave it any thought beyond 'can breathe under water'. :D
