I’ve gone through this process countless times and it never gets any easier to cut out chunks of my writing.
Funnily enough, when I was about to cut out a line from chapter 12, a plot bunny attacked me.
And not just any plot bunny, it was a HpXLotR plot bunny- which took me by surprise. Isn’t it odd how a line from a HpXNaruto story created a plot for a completely different fandom?
The brain really does work in mysterious ways.
Anyway, as you’ve read, chapter 12 is undergoing heavy editing. Microsoft word says I have 8,648 words… but that’s bound to change when I fill in the spaces and delete chunks of writing.
The one thing that’s really been bugging me is timeline in the Naruto manga- Kishimoto never really gives a concrete time/date for when events occur. At least if Kurenai’s baby was born, I’d have a better grasp of the timing…
As of chapter 12, Harry is still in August- so I’m going to be using lots of time skips over things like travel- will tweak that as I edit or get new information.
I have to say a huge thanks to everyone who posted helpful suggestions for my writing and the numerous distractions on my last blog post. It’s rather hard to find short and fun one-shots on ff.net.

Well Naruto left the village when he was 13 according to one of the data books and was gone for 2 and 1/2 years and he said he was 16 when he was talking to his father in the seal so.... Pain's attack has to be somewhere after October 10th... I'm pretty sure there's a timeline somewhere on this site.

Might have to go and ask on the forums because I can't find it but I'm pretty sure they had one because I can vaguely remember seeing it at one point.

ReplyDeleteToo bad you had to erase so much dialogue :( Still, 8000 words is nothing to sneeze at! Unless you've had to delete more of that?
Are you aiming for this chapter to be over 10000 words as well?
I think your going to have to go by artistic licence with this a bit.... everything on that chart is estimated anyways. At the end of that chart it only accounts for 15 1/2 years and Naruto outright said he was 16 during the Pain thing. So Naruto was 12 and 6+ months but under 13 years old at the Series start.
ReplyDeleteI don't think your going to find a solid timeline anywhere. Leafninja is pretty up to date and has all the info as far as I know. If there was one I'm pretty sure they would have had it.
I did check under a couple other timelines they have posted. They didn't have the date of Asuma's death under his bio unfortunately.
All of the chapters seem to average on 8,000 words. It really depends on the author and the amount of work that they want to get done in that one chapter. I would be lucky to get my chapters to 5,000 a piece if I could actually finish anything. *sigh* Good luck with your editing!

ReplyDeleteI've decided not to bother aiming for any fixed word count. I deem a chapter done when it has all the required scenes I'd planned out for it. Word counts just make things seem like homework/assignments.
All right, thanks for the info. I'll just have to add another line- about inaccurate timeline- to my warnings in the first chapter for the story
ReplyDeleteWell I think anyone who puts a chapter over 1000 words has done a good job. 5000 word chapters are rather awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think the only reason my chapters now are long is because I tend to take too much time on them- way too much sometimes. i tend to stuff things in one chapter to make up for the long time between updates...if that makes sense.
Oh, I see. Hmmm, it always seems to be summer in Konoha, so who knows?
