Whoa! I finally managed to get this chapter done and online. And trust me when I say, I never intended for it to be delayed for so long.
I wasn't waiting for reviews or anything... heaven knows I have way too many of those. Reviews play no role in what I write or when I write.
And it wasn't really writer's block- just a sense of wrongness that permeated a lot of the chapter. I had to re-write a lot of it because it didn't feel right. And some parts of it had to be moved to future chapters/deleted because it just didn't fit in.
I'm really glad I'm finally happy with what I ended up with. It gives you some answers and points to a potential future plots, but more than likely I think it just gives you more questions!
Random notes/clarifications.
Kakashi- I can just imagine all the fangirls (and boys) going...WTF kind of meeting was that? Where was the laughs and the craziness and the odd bonding over porn? Meh... what? You really expected me to do something predictable?
Sai- Why does Sai get more air time than Kakashi? Because he's an interesting character in his weird anti-social way. I don't know, in some ways Harry could have become like Sai, so a part of me likes to see how they'd react to each other. He was hard to write at times and honestly I just made up parts of psychology for him to say- all to add a feeling of books-can't-really-teach-you-stuff sort of thing.
Chakra blockage- I spent ages trying to some up with some plausible way of introducing a difference between chakra and magic. So I decided to have Harry figure out that his magic spells can't detect chakra pathways.
Wound healing biology- A very abbreviated info dump from the Wiki page. It took me a while to sort through all that and come up with something acceptable enough to use as Sakura's explanation to Harry.
Elemental corner derivative- Err, yeah. Made up with math sounding name combined with Naruto logic of dependence of elements.
Odd Innuendos- I really don't know what it was, but the initial drafts of this chapter was filled with so much innuendo...it was ridiculous. I edited most of them before remembering the rejected writing section- so most of them have permanently disappeared. Thankfully/sadly there were still some I managed to find on the final edit.
Rejected writing (writing too silly/wrong to keep in the actual chapter)
The odd/sometimes bad-ish pornographic lines.
1-He had to consciously restrain his fingers from stretching and flexing in the comforting warmth.
2-I’ll help, just to ensure the proper flow. Don't worry, it won't hurt.
3- Harry curled his fingers in the relaxing heat and sighed.
I'm sure the ones that I had before were even worse.

P.S.-I'm definitely going to be replying to all of your PMs and comments. Sorry about the long delay with that as well.
P.P.S- Omg-osh I just realized it's been a year-ish since I started the story.
P.P.P.S- I might just make another 'story' for AtO on ffnet- so that I can post extra scenes from the AtO universe. Scenes that don't really have much of an impact on the plot.
I'd love to read these extra scenes you speak of. I wouldn't mind at all to have them in the story itself -- if they're part of your story, I don't mind that they have nothing to do with the plot, and they could be important to show us character and relationships development (things I love reading about). But if you'd prefer to put them up separatedly, that's fine too. May I ask what kind of scenes you have in mind?

Hmm well the scenes I was thinking of making was just humorous things that could happen around Harry in the ninja world.
ReplyDeleteI wanted it to be separate because I can make each chapter sort of like one-shots from different people's perspectives in nor particular order. Or just silly conversations that occur just because of Harry's presence in that world.
I don't want different PoVs in the main story. Plus I think the chapters are already big enough with things that pertain to the future plot- I don't want to fill it up with things that don't really matters.
I guess it would be considered an Omake series.
Usually I don't like it much when an author writes little stories to go with the main one instead of focusing on the plot. Except that this time I think your idea's good.
ReplyDeleteFirst, Against the Odd is fitting with only one point of view, it's the story of Harry's quest for family.
And also, I don't think I'm the only one dying from curiosity about how Harry is perceived by the ninjas. Curiosity? Suspicion? Sympathy? Amusement? Worry? I'd like to see what Tsunade, Shikaku, Ibiki thought about "It must be hard with only one eye". I bet Tsunade loved it. Maybe that's why she offered dango to Harry ;-)
And well, as I said in my review, I'm sure an encounter with Gai and Lee, while it might be pointless for the plot, would be a lot of fun.
So I'll go back on everything I would have said usually, and say: go ahead, write this omake series, as long as you enjoy it.
@Malice- I was thinking of doing a scene where Tsunade and the others discuss Harry before and after they deliver the news. I always thought it's such a shame that I can't put it in to the story.
ReplyDeleteGai and Lee- it's traumatic just thinking about them too much. Poor Harry- the numerous odd ways they can come into his life.
I don't know. I'll see what happens. I do have some scenes that I'd cut out from previous chapters, and I doubt I'll use them in the future.
A part of me feels it's wrong to create a separate story just to put these things up. Another part of me just feels sad leaving those things in the darkness. Hmm, I need some more time to think about it.
For what it's worth, I'd be very very very happy if you posted those scenes you cut out, and even happier to see this Tsunade and co. scene.
ReplyDelete...if you don't post them on FF.net, maybe you could post them here?

I haven't reviewed the latest chapter yet, because I've gotten sick and am feeling lazy. I did like it very much it, however. The Naruto/Harry and Sai interactions were great to see.
ReplyDeleteObviously, I'm also voting for you posting 'unused snippets'... especially if it's from other people's POV. I really want to know what Shikaku thinks of Harry... and doing two before/after 'group discussions', like you suggested yourself, would be a lot of fun. Especially if Ibiki is there, because I have the hugest crush on him.
@ vivi(?)- hmm, posting them on this blog could work. At least it wouldn't just remain on my hard-drive.
ReplyDelete@romantiscue- Sick during school time? Ick! Unless of course you're taking days off, then there's a bit of a plus to that.
And...crush on Ibiki? Really? How... odd.
I went one day, but I stayed home yesterday. Luckily it is weekendtime so I won't miss too much. And post the snippets here! And maybe comment on it in the AN on AtO, so people will know.
ReplyDelete...DO NOT DISS THE IBIKI. SERIOUSLY.
