Chapter 14 A/N

First of all, cake for everyone- I actually put the chapter up when I said I would (a few hours off from the May 10th date because I got distracted by some LPs on YouTube after uploading DtE)

Anyway on to the notes.

As I mentioned before, I had two versions of this chapter- each with vastly different events and ideas. No, I'm not kidding. The only real common point was the basic premise of going to Suna.

The first version-which will never see the light of day except for want to read it due to boredom- had Danzo conning/pressuring/guilting Harry into taking the Suna job, a visit to the Nara labs, Kakashi going to Suna, Gaara and Harry have some sort of awkward conversation through metaphors (literal metaphors, for some reason. I don't understand what I was thinking when I wrote it).

In the end, I just disliked the feel of what I had. So the alternate chapter 14 came into being a few months back.

Wordcount
AtO14 Ver.1 (unpublished): 10, 969
AtO 14 Ver.2 (Draft): 16,633
  '' (final): 13,370
I didn't even realize that I'd edited out 3000+ words. That's crazy. I wonder what I edited out over the months.

Danzo
I couldn't imagine him not being in this chapter. At this point in the timeline, he must be thinking of how useful Harry can be and he'll probably want to get a better feel of the poor guy.
So Danzo, with his favourite rice tea, tries to understand Harry's mentality with a surprisingly non-hostile conversation.
Was he ultimately disappointed or happy with what he gleaned off Harry?- that would be telling.

The Wandering Tiger
Some  imagery that inspired the creation of the teahouse.

There was another one- with a vivid blue pond in front of a house, but I can't seem to find it.

Chapter 13 A/N

There's so much to say about this chapter. Most of it is just random thoughts I had after reading it just before uploading it online. Most of the thoughts center around Harry being awesome in his own unique way.

So bear with me as I go through some of my favourite Harry skills/etc.

If you've read the chapter- you would have noticed an abundance of Harry sleeping in highly uncomfortable places and always waking up not feeling as grumpy as he ought to. I envy him. If I wake up with a stiff neck/back, I'm very inclined to beat someone up and then claim that was a stretching exercise.

Another awesome Harry skill from this chapter? The ability to bring out Naruto's emotions- good, bad and just adorable. But then I sort of go- Harry is way too awesome as an older sibling when he deals with Naruto! My older bro isn't as awesome. His idea of dealing with my bad moods was to hand me a glass of cola and leave me alone.

Hmm, now I wonder if I put too much awesomeness in Harry. I mean he is awesome to begin with- but maybe I've overdone it somehow by making him an idealized version of an older sibling?

Anyway some actual notes about things in chapter 13

Shikamaru still smoking- In the manga, they show Shikamaru smoking during the days after Asuma's death, before he meets Hidan and Kakuzu a few days later. It just seemed too easy for Shikamaru to just stop smoking after getting his revenge. Even with the whole symbolism of putting Asuma to rest with the cigarette motif- it was too easy. Letting go of the dead and anything connected to the dead is not supposed to be that easy. So Shikamaru is going to have a smoking problem- not to be considered cool or badass, but because he's a teenager who's dealing with the loss of a mentor as best as he can.

The memorial for the monks- I added that just to have some closure about what happened at the temple. The only real way for Harry to get information about the temple was to get it from a monk. Plus I remembered a reviewer asking me if Sentoki had died too- which I thought was hilarious because that was just such a large leap of logic there. (Also I find it so weird that readers want explanations for the smallest of things- even things that aren't important to the plot at all)

Sake- I read up so much about it- trying to find out if you can actually get hungover from drinking too much. Of course, the more I read, the more I got distracted from my original search. Eventually I learnt about the different kinds of sake and the etiquette behind sake drinking. I think I spent a good part of Dec last year just reading more and more about it in my spare time (for no reason other than curiosity). Here's the interesting website for more info.

Jiraiya- He's one of my top ten favourite characters in Naruto. So I was very careful about how I wanted him to act. But he's complicated. I personally think he was the most broken of the three sannin. While both his team-mates lost themselves to their grief and ambitions, he pushed himself to not be like them. But that doesn't mean he wasn't jaded after living so long and losing so much along the way. I also wanted to capture just how much of a ninja he is- so I made him cool in some small unexpected ways. I don't know if that came across though.

Harry-decoy plan- Well, what were you expecting? I doubt they'd want to make Harry's trip/disappearance public knowledge in Britain. It works rather nicely for AtO's ending- what I have so far at least.

Harry and alcohol- Teenagers in dorms without adult supervision and friends with the Weasley twins- he must have tried some Firewhiskey. Well, in my head, I'm sure Harry must have at least sipped it out of curiosity.

Lapifors- Is a spell from the Harry Potter games (shows up earliest in the PoA game) Similarly, Avifors is another spell from the games and it shows up in the first game. Thank goodness for the wikia- otherwise I wouldn't have known these spells existed at all.

Mom and Mum- Naruto uses 'mom' while Harry 'mum'. Yes, that is deliberate on my part. I suppose it's a way to keep Harry's Britishness even though he's not actually talking in English with all the Naruto characters. But using this might show that he has a foreign accent compared to the ninja.

Sirius's quote from the movie- I liked it, so what?

Tidbits of information about chapter 13

1- The first time Harry creates his Patronus, the happy memory he's thinking about is actually a mix of memories- reading his grandmother's letter, hearing from Tsunade that Naruto is his cousin and having Naruto call him nii-san. It's the reason why his Patronus was slightly larger than usual and why he probably cast faster than usual.

2-Naruto could probably say Hermione's name. But in the end, he sort of realizes that if he messes it up too bad, he might upset her. And also he doesn't want to look too bad in front of Harry's important friends, also he might be a bit overwhelmed that Harry told other people about him and those people were excited to see him.

3- A few of the toasts that Harry makes over the course of their drinking would have made if he had been truly drunk. "To old people who need more warm socks." "To monks who miss their hair." "To Nara-san's shogi BS-ing skills." "To cat-san and not-cat-san and all other cats." Side note: Jiraiya's drunk toast- if he ever managed to get really drunk: "To ****** who ****** and *******"

4- When Naruto and Harry are using the two-way mirror- eventually, Hermione sees the frozen blue birds and ends up going into a lecture mode-which doesn't shock Naruto at all actually.

5- Amount of words deleted/moved on to other chapters = Rounded up estimate is almost 3100+ words (about a 1000 of those words got removed just before I uploaded)

Some bits I removed from the chapter (they just didn't fit in)
Someone smacked the back of Harry's head.“What the...”
Sai looked at him unapologetically. “Sakura said this is what Naruto would do.”
“Right.” Harry rubbed the back of his head. “That makes perfect sense.”
“It does?" Sai said. "I don't understand the necessity. And it does seem rather harsh considering you are rather delicate...”

“Thank you for the flowers. I'll be sure to tell Naruto you dropped by. Oh! Would you like a moment alone? I can come back in a bit.”
The girl eeped slightly and shook her head vigorously. “You don't have to... I mean, uh... I have to get going.” She spared one last look at Naruto, blush becoming more vivid, and hurried out of the room.
 ===============
I think that covers just about everything.

Happy reading.

Konoha Clan musings

Abilities
1- From canon: Naras, Inuzakas, Yamanakas, Akamichis, Kurama, Aburame, Sarutobi,- have unique and specific jutsus.

Hyuuga, Senju, Uchiha, Aburame (sort of)- have bloodline limit

What I gather from that: A clan needs to have some unique abilities in order to be considered a clan. Whether it's a bloodline or just a unique method of fighting/being useful to the village.
----
2- From canon: Senju Harishama had the Mokuton. Senju Tobirama had his Suiton skills. Tsunade... er well super strength and healing.

What I gather from that: Not all clan members have the same ability. Not all skills can be inherited/passed on even if they are some sort of bloodline limit.
---
3- From canon: Hatake Kakashi has a sharingan eye. Yamato has Mokuton. Danzo...well you know.

What I gather from that
: Bloodline abilities can be taken/implanted and used by non-clan members.
Also, the fact that Kakashi was able to keep his Sharingan eye- does that show that The Uchiha didn't have the power to take it back from him? Did the Hokage intervene there somehow- surely they wouldn't have been happy with it.

Clan politics.

1- Canon: Hyuuga branch members have seals on them. Almost like slaves.

What I gather from that
: The Hokage doesn't seem to have a say in clan politics/issues of inheritance/how clan members get treated by the clan head.
---
2- Canon: Uchiha Massacre, sealing the powers of Yakumo Kurama (from the anime filler only)

What I gather from that
: If the clan/a member of a clan is deemed a threat to the village, the Hokage has the power to step in and deal with it in any way possible.
---
3- Canon: Nara Shikaku is jounin commander. Yamanaka Inoichi works in T&I.

What I gather from that
: Just because you're a clan head, doesn't mean you can't have a high position in the village. Or well, being a clan head doesn't exempt you from important positions.
---
4- Canon: Root members include a Yamanaka and Aburame.

What I gather from that: Danzo is evil and smart. And clan heads can't control everything their clan members do, unless you're the Hyuuga who put seals on your members.

Some notes
1- Hatake- It's never really mentioned as a clan in canon. It's just the family name for Kakashi and Sakumo both of whom became famous for their skills in battle.
2- Pre-shinobi village era- there must be some relation to being a clan prior to the formation of the village system under a Kage. So clans need to have a history from prior?

Interesting random things I've come across
1- Final Fantasy A+ by Mousekliks
This is an old flash movie/animation that's absolutely hilarious. As the name implies, it's a sort of parody of a Final Fantasy series. It's bound to make you laugh even if you haven't really played any FF games. (But it's funnier if you're familiar with the gameplay) And maybe inspire you a bit- it helped me write out a bit of ch 10!

2- Untold Stories by Teh-Akuma-Yoru [Naruto fanart]
This artwork got recommended to me. At first I was like- that's not very artsy looking. But I scrolled down and saw the story #3- Lamentation. And wow. Just... wow! Those few panels were worth so many words. Heartbreaking but awesome.

Polar
P.S- I've been toying with the idea of creating a separate story on ffnet- mostly it would be a collection of extra scenes from AtO, things that don't really have a lot to do with the plot- just scenes that take place in that universe- kind of like an omake series. Is it better to open a new story or just place the omakes at the end of my chapters? Or should I just not put that stuff up?
P.P.S- 6132 words... Things have been unusually slow- must be all the summer diversions that's been keeping me away from writing.
P.P.P.S - Ghosts...hmmm yeah, well I suppose that's interesting. I'm actually way more interested in Edo Tensei. Zombies ftw! *insane laugh*

Uzumaki Clan

So, I've been postponing this post because of the recent manga chapters. I've always wanted to make a speculation post of what I thought the clan was like- etc. So you can imagine my surprise when I read the recent chapters and just went...woah, it's Kushina. And then I was like- finally, now I get to know the canon truth about the Uzumaki clan! But damn it, Kishimoto pulled a fast one on me and just took the plot in a different direction.

But either ways, I was really glad when Kushina said that she had some sort of special chakra. It sort of ties in to what I was making my story's Uzumaki clan- the fact that their chakra can become physical weapons (like I wrote in Ch. 2). So that really helped me get some writing done for chapter 9!

So what does my story's version of the Uzumaki clan have so far?
- Well just for clarification let me name a few members I've created to join both worlds
  • Akira Uzumaki- The clan head who managed to open a portal thing to Harry's world. He's currently a ghost stuck haunting the ruins of the former Whirlpool village. Eldest brother to Orihime and Yuriko.
  • Orihime Uzumaki Evans- Harry's grandmother. Younger sister to Akira and older sister to Yuriko. Returned to Whirlpool with her husband after giving birth to Lily. Unknown what has happened to her!
  • Yuriko Uzumaki- Youngest sibling to Akira and Orihime. Unknown what has happened to her!
- The Uzumaki chakra could be used to make tangible weapons. So even if you took away their normal weapons, they were deadly.
- They were the main clan of Whirlpool village- based on the similarities of names. But the village definitely had other people there. Akira is only identified as clan head not village leader.
- The clan didn't have trained fighter that could stand up against shinobi. At least during Akira's time! They were more of healers and pacifists.
- Uzumaki facial characteristics- A round face, fiery red hair and blue-purple eyes. Unfortunately they've not been passed down to the current generation.

Well that's all I can write without giving away things. But I'll definitely add more things as I finalize the next chapter.

Will there be other Uzumaki people who are alive? Oh I definitely want some people. Are there any canon redheads? *smirk* Just think of the crazy/unbelievable possibilities. Ohh those are just plot bunnies waiting to be written- even if I don't use them for AtO.

Polar
P.S. As for chapter 9- I'm getting there. Don't worry, I'll have the chapter up sometime during this month.

A look at Konoha Politics!

So this is just a collection of political things I've come across from various fanfics, discussions and the Naruto series itself.

The Canon Politics
Daimyos
The ruler of a country who provides funding for the ninja villages. They can decide who becomes the next Kage and if the ninja take a certain military/war actions. (Manga chapters 488)
But this person doesn't really go in depth with the internal ninja affairs. That stuff falls to the Kages.
An interesting tidbit is the Twelve Guardians that contains a combination of ninjas, monks etc. Asuma Sarutobi was a part of them for a while.

Kages

The ruler of a ninja village usually chosen by being the strongest. An existing Kage may retire and pass his title to someone he/she considers the strongest.
In case the Kage dies before choosing a sucessor, a Kage is chosen by the Daimyo and his council. (If you're sneaky enough you can make the Daimyo appoint you as the Kage!)
Responsibilities include
  • protecting the village by any means necessary
  • keeping all your ninja functioning by obtaining and distributing missions
  • wearing a funky hat that acts as identification when all the Kages meet (so there must be something on the hat itself- a seal perhaps?)
Elders/Sandaime's teammates
They seem to have political power but I never really understood how they managed to stay in power. Or why they seem to have so much influence.
Anyway they seem to be part of the Daimyo's council and have a say in the choosing of a Hokage. (Still need to read up some more on them along with Danzo- I'm not completely sure about their duties.)

The Iffy politics (things from fanfics/speculation discussions)
1- Civilian Council
It's basically found in the evil-Konoha/abused-Naruto stories. A bunch of civilian people make up the council and they try to butt into the matter of ninjas and things.
Realistically- I think if this did exist in a ninja village, they would never be able to interfere with ninja matter- not if they value their life. The only thing they'd probably talk about that involved ninja was the civilian-security and stuff like that. Otherwise they'd stick to trade and other boring non-ninja things.

2- The Clan Council
A collection of all the clan heads who decide a lot of ninja related issues! It makes sense in a way because Konoha is filled with a lot of influential clans. But I don't really like this as a political system.

Bits I like
I like the idea of the Hokage having some sort of council to help with ninja affairs. I just don't think it should include people just because they are head of a clan. They should have some sort of purpose in the council, you know? Plus I think the Clan heads are more involved in the running of their clan.

Anyone have any suggestions of things I can read up for more info? I'd really like to read some more things before finalizing my own version of the Konoha politics.

In other news, Chapter 9 is slow but getting there. I haven't gotten past the 5000 word mark yet, so obviously I have a lot of writing left to do. But the research keeps bogging me down. Also random plot bunnies keep distracting me! But I'm hopeful to get most of the writing done by the end of next week. *crosses fingers*
