AC_D8: An Extended Stay at the Fire Temple (Part 2)

This is a prompt fill for foxsw “I'd like a followup to the story on ff chapter 7, where Tsunade and the clan-heads try to understand how their tame civilan Uzimaki Harry killed two unkillable, immortal akutsuki.”

As Shizune entered the office, Shikaku gathered his papers and turned to leave.

“Stay,” Tsunade said and turned to her assistant. “Did you complete the autopsies?”

Shikaku straightened. There could only be one autopsy that Tsunade was waiting for.

“Did some extra tests, just in case.” Shizune nodded, the thick files in her hand coupled with with slight tinge of darkness under her eyes showed just how much work she had done.“Nothing.”

“Nothing?” Shikaku asked when Tsunade didn't.

“Nothing,” Shizune repeated, her eyes fixed on the Hokage. “No poisons, no damaged organs, no real physical damage other than those self-inflicted ones that the pale one had. The one that matched Na...” Shizune paused and cleared her throat, looking away from the Hokage's hard eyes and down at her files. “They just died.”

Tsunade took a deep breath and nodded. “The bodies.”

“I've sealed them up again,” Shizune held up a hand, showing the dark scroll tucked on the inside of her kimono sleeve. “Along with all the samples and tests I did.”

Shikaku stared. “You know what he did to them.”

Tsunade turned him with sharp eyes and a formidable amount of intent.

“What is it?” Shikaku asked, after taking a steadying breath.

After a long moment of judgement, she said, “I have a possible idea. But I need to go somewhere to confirm my suspicions.”

“Considering how much you're,” Shikaku stopped, not wanting to acknowledge that she was hiding things. “Leaving this office won't go unnoticed.”

“Yes,” Tsunade frowned. “But I need to go.”

“It's about time that you inspected some of the newer work in our labs,” Shikaku suggested.

Tsunade shook her head. “That won't be enough of a cover. I need to get outside of Konoha to visit a shrine. One that I visited with my grandmother.”

Shizune stilled just like Shikaku did, but he said, “I'll work something out.”

“The mask is still here,” she said, not giving away which of the numerous masks on the walls she was talking about. “So he did not use it to summon the Shinigami.”

Shikaku's throat went dry. “You think he summoned the Shinigami.”

“We need to get back. I need to check up on Naruto.”

“Do you think he knows about this place? Or maybe he has a copy?”

Tsunade snorted. “The mask cannot be replicated.”

“Then how,” Shikaku asked.

“We'll just have to wait until he starts speaking again to tell us what he did,” Tsunade said, turning away from the hanging masks.

Shikaku frowned. The boy hadn't spoken since the Fire Temple. All he did was sit at Naruto's bedside.

“Things will be better when Naruto wakes up,” Tsunade said.

Shikaku pretended not to hear the fearful doubt in her voice.

Why bother with other clan heads when you can just have Shikaku hog the entire spotlight as usual?
